Water Capital City Kumamoto宣言（Declaration of the Water Capital City Kumamoto）
● 熊本市は、73万市民の水道水源の全てを地下水でまかなう「世界に誇る地下水都市」です。また、この豊富な地下水が湧出する江津湖は、自然と人が関わり共生してきた市民の憩いの場であるとともに、約600種類の動植物が生息する豊かな生物多様性を支える重要な拠点となっています。
Kumamoto City, one of the world’s few “groundwater cities,” supplies 100% of the drinking water for its approximately 730,000 residents from groundwater. The source of this abundant groundwater, Lake Ezu, is not only a popular place for recreation for the city’s residents but also a diverse ecosystem that is home to around 600 species of plants and animals.
● このように、市民の生活に欠かせない熊本市の豊かな自然は、長年にわたり市民をはじめとする多様な主体が手を携え、守り継いできたものであり、これからも市民の貴重な財産として、未来の世代へ引き継いでいかなければなりません。
Kumamoto City’s rich natural environment, which is indispensable to the lives of its residents, has been preserved and passed down over many years through the joint efforts of citizens and a wide range of stakeholders. As a precious asset, it must continue to be preserved and passed on to future generations.
● 近年、熊本の経済は新たな発展の局面を迎えています。その背景には、豊かな地下水をはじめとする自然の恵みがあり、自然を守ることが都市の成長につながるということが、強く認識されています。
In recent years, Kumamoto City has entered a new phase of economic development. This is due in part to the region’s natural blessings, especially the groundwater resources, and there is a strong understanding that the growth of the city is connected to the protection of its natural environment.
● そこで、「Global Nature Positive Summit 2026」の開催を契機に、熊本市は「Water Capital City Kumamoto」を掲げ、地下水をはじめとする自然資本を都市経営の基盤として、未来へ継承し、その価値を活かし、自然再興と経済発展が両立する都市を実現します。
Taking Global Nature Positive Summit 2026 as an opportunity, Kumamoto City hereby promotes “Water Capital City Kumamoto.” By establishing natural capital—including groundwater—as the foundation of urban management, the city will preserve this capital for future generations, leverage its value, and realize a city where the restoration of nature and economic development coexist.
● そして、この宣言に基づく取組を世界に発信し、ネイチャーポジティブな社会の実現に貢献していきます。
Through the initiatives undertaken through this declaration, Kumamoto City will share its vision and achievements with the world and contribute to the realization of a nature-positive society.
